Great NEWS! The DMHS Education Foundation held it’s Holiday Auction last weekend. They set a goal to raise $1500 towards their mission to support DMHS trips. Our community showed up in an AMAZING way. Your generous bids allowed the Foundation to raise just over $6000! Thank you for helping us to meet and surpass our goal. I am grateful to both the Foundation and to all of you for your tremendous support. As we head into the break, I also want to acknowledge our staff. I hope you will join me in sending them many warm wishes for a restful break. Over the last few weeks Carol has been gathering alumni stories, and through these stories I’ve had the opportunity to hear about the impact the DMHS staff have had on students. The commitment that our teachers and staff have made to ensuring our students develop as independent, successful citizens of the world is clear from the work our graduates continue to do in the world beyond DMHS!
I also want to extend my personal gratitude to our entire community. Over the last couple of weeks you’ve been asked to participate in the Principal selection process. Your engagement in this process is very much appreciated. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to view the video and provide your feedback, there is still some time to do so (linked here until 5pm). It has been a privilege and delight to serve you through these first months of school, and I very much look forward to the opportunity to continue our work together through next semester and hopefully for years to come.
I will quickly touch on just two more items – return to school and the end of this quarter. As you know, it is projected we will return for in-person learning as early as January 19th. I want to assure our families that every step of the way you will receive detailed information, including information on our health and safety protocols, any necessary scheduling adjustments and the protocols for making the transition as seamless as possible. On January 14th I will host a DMHS Town Hall where I will present our comprehensive plan. Should it become clear that the timeline for in-person learning will be adjusted we’ll share that information as it comes. In the meantime please save-the-date and plan to join me on 1/14/21 at 5:30 pm.
In closing I want to remind you that tomorrow, December 18th is the end of the 2nd quarter. We expect all school work to be turned in by the end of the day. I want to share that we are concerned about work completion, and encourage families to check Schoology with their child before heading off for the break. As we close out this quarter we don’t want there to be any missed opportunities to demonstrate learning. We KNOW our students are capable, driven learners and anticipate seeing an influx of assignments tomorrow! We will be on break beginning Monday, December 21st through Monday, January 4th. I will send a community update the week of 12/29 so that we can share any updates and plans for the week we return to school.
Finally, we are wrapping up what is arguably one of the most challenging years any of us have faced in our lifetime. I think we all share in the belief that 2021 brings the promise of fresh starts, course correction and well – it’s not going to be 2020! I wish you all a restful break and hope that your family stays safe and well. We will see you all next year!
As we bring this challenging year to a close, I would like to express my gratitude to the DMHS community. Throughout all the changes and challenges that this year has brought our way, our DMHS community has been so gracious and supportive. I hope you have a wonderful Winter Break!
The First Round School Choice process opens on January 15 at 8am and closes February 16. Please note that all current students will automatically be enrolled at DMHS for the 2021-22 school year. As we begin planning for next year, it would be very helpful for us to know if your student plans on staying at DMHS next school year by filling out this intent to return survey. (I know we are all tired of surveys, but I promise, this is truly a 1 minute survey.)
In preparation for school choice, our amazing Farm School hospitality managers have been visiting our feeder elementary schools. So far, they have presented at Denison, Lincoln, and Sandoval, and also helped with our first information session with families. We will be hosting another virtual Farm School Information Session on Thursday, January 21 at 6 pm. https://zoom.us/j/96333130598 Please share this information with anyone you know might be interested in coming to DMHS next school year!
High School Information Night
Following the DMHS Town Hall at 5:30 pm on January 14, we will be hosting a High School Information Night at 6 pm. This is an opportunity to hear from our High School team about the 10th-12th grade program. We highly recommend that all 8th and 9th grade families attend this event.

SO many thanks to the people who volunteered to join the panel talking to Seniors about life, work, and education after High School! Rowena Alegria, Effrem Norwood, Tunisha Hairston-Brown, Lauren Castillo, Kiahna Calder, Devin Knight, and Robin Yokel. It was really powerful to hear from folks who graduated HS many years ago, or recently; people who have started businesses and initiatives; and others who’ve navigated many different job and career paths. Most of all I think it helped our students think BIG about what’s possible for them and what they want to do and experience in their adult lives. Thank you! ~Leah, HS Program Director
